That\u2019s 2 or 3 children in every classroom needing specialist help! Making friends, understanding other people and achieving their full potential can be really difficult without essential speech, language and communication skills.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">ICAN, the children\u2019s communication charity supports these children and their families and helps to ensure that they receive the help they need. This Spring, 1st- 8th March, ICAN are holding a Chatterbox Challenge Mad Chatters Tea Party fun fundraising event that you can all get involved with. To find an event near you do please look on their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chatterboxchallenge.org.uk\/\">website.<\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2619\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2619\" style=\"width: 637px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.me\/p32uYg-FW\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2619 \" src=\"https:\/\/kidscraftroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/logo.jpg\" alt=\"Mad Chatters Tea Party\" width=\"637\" height=\"614\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/kidscraftroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/logo.jpg\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2619\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Have fun at a \u2018Mad Chatters Tea Party\u2019 fundraiser.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">Tea parties offer so many great opportunities for children to develop communication skills in a really fun way, whether it\u2019s with their friends, family or just their favourite toys. Kate Freeman, I CAN Communication Advisor and experienced paediatric speech and language therapist, offers a few simple tips for a great \u2018communication friendly\u2019 tea party or get together:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Adults can help children develop their communication skills by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Getting the child\u2019s attention before speaking to them<\/li>\n<li>Using natural gestures and signs to support the meaning of words and sentences<\/li>\n<li>Get down to the child\u2019s level to talk to them<\/li>\n<li>Give the child plenty of time to say what they want to say.\u00a0 Listen more than you talk, then respond to what the child is saying<\/li>\n<li>Encourage the children at the tea party to talk and play together \u2013 they can also ask each other what they would like (offering and responding to choice, especially food and drink, is communication at its most meaningful).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Here are some of her lovely ideas for games you can play at your tea party\u00a0or get-together.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Fun games to play at parties to develop children\u2019s communication skills:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Singing and rhyming songs \u2013 are a great way to help children learn vocabulary and have fun making music together<\/li>\n<li>Playing clapping games (Pat-a-Cake) \u2013 this helps children to develop their coordination, control and movement as well as learning vocabulary and social skills<\/li>\n<li>Word Games (Simon Says and I Spy) \u2013 this helps to develop children\u2019s vocabulary about the world around them and to listen to instructions\u00a0 (These games can be adapted to easier versions for younger children)<\/li>\n<li>Turn taking games (Pass the Parcel) \u2013 this helps children to learn when to talk and when to listen<\/li>\n<li>Imaginative play like toys\u2019 tea parties \u2013 this helps children to expand their language for use in a range of situations and develop their creativity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here\u00a0are some of\u00a0the children at\u00a0I CAN\u2019s Meath school, for children with severe and complex speech, language and communication needs, having a wonderful time with Humf\u00a0at the launch Chatterbox Challenge Tea Party.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2617\" src=\"https:\/\/kidscraftroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Chatterbox-Challenge-Tea-Party-at-Meath-School-with-Humf-s.jpg\" alt=\"Tea Party With Humf\" width=\"468\" height=\"312\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/kidscraftroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Chatterbox-Challenge-Tea-Party-at-Meath-School-with-Humf-s.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Perhaps you\u2019ll be able to join in with a local tea party or start\u00a0 your own? (If you don\u2019t have any sugar pastes a\u00a0simple icing made from icing sugar and water would be just as nice.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #28d0d7;\"><strong>Equipment<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2\u00a0large baking\u00a0trays<\/li>\n<li>cling film<\/li>\n<li>grease-proof paper<\/li>\n<li>teacup and teapot cutters<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #28d0d7;\">How To Make Iced Biscuits<\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><em>Pre-heat the oven to 180C.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Line the baking trays with grease-proof paper.<\/li>\n<li>Beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.<\/li>\n<li>Beat in the egg.<\/li>\n<li>Add the flour and mix to form a firm dough.<\/li>\n<li>Wrap in cling film and pop it in the fridge for 20 minutes to chill.<\/li>\n<li>Roll out on a lightly floured board to about 3mm thickness.
