Who can resist cute pom poms? They are so easy to make and great for all sorts of fun craft projects. In this post I’m showing you how to make a gorgeous rainbow pom pom mobile that will look adorable in a nursery, child or teen bedroom.

Even though my kiddies are quite big now it’s been all things baby here recently because a close neighbour has just had the most gorgeous baby girl. I have to say I have thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon tea and biscuit sessions I’ve had with my friend prepping and browsing for nursery products. I can’t believe how things have changed over the short time since my boys were little!

Coming from a professional background promoting early years communication I was delighted to see that more and more prams and buggies now have a rear facing option so that you can easily see and chat with your baby while you’re out and about. I had to search high and low to find one when my boys were tiny!

Now that baby is finally here I really wanted to gift the gorgeous new arrival something homemade and that my own children could help to create too. We decided to make a pom pom mobile with rainbow colours because it would be bright and jolly for the nursery but equally appealing to big kids and even teens too!

How To Make A Pom Pom Mobile

To make a pom pom mobile you’ll need to choose 8 yarn colours and 2 pom pom maker sizes. We chose rainbow coloured yarn and the small pom pom set of two from Clover that you can see in the picture.

If you’ve never used a pom pom maker before and have only made them with the traditional and slow method using cardboard discs then you are going to be amazed! These little pom pom makers are going to rock your pom pom world! Seriously! I’ve used mine loads and I’m still super excited about them LOL. You can craft up a whole hoard of gorgeous pom poms in different sizes so quickly and I love that my kids can use them too!

To make a pom pom mobile you’ll need to make 8 large and 8 small pom poms, one of each size for each colour. Trim any straggly threads off your pom poms and tie the large pom pom onto the end of a meter/yard long piece of yarn in the same colour. Then using a large needle, thread on a large wooden bead, followed by the small pom pom and 2 small wooden beads. If you don’t have any beads you could still make a pom pom mobile without them.

Once you’ve got your eight rainbow coloured pom pom chains you’re ready to hang them. We hung ours on a wooden stick from the garden that we’d decorated.

To make the ends of the stick pretty we wrapped around a piece of blue tissue paper and stuck it into place with sticky tape.

Then we simply wrapped the whole stick tightly in blue yarn, tied the end and tucked the thread in securely. The final part of making a pom pom mobile is to attach the pom pom and bead chains to the stick. This bit was a little too tricky for my children to do on their own.

I laid the pom pom chains out in an arc like a rainbow and then tied each one loosely to the yarn covered stick. When I was sure they were all hanging at the correct height and distance from each other I tightened them, wrapped the coloured yard around the stick a few times, knotted it securely and cut away any excess.

I finished the pom pom mobile off by tying a hanging thread to each end of the stick.

I’m sure this rainbow pom pom mobile will be a lovely colourful addition to my friend’s nursery and it’s stylish enough to appeal to her baby daughter as she grows up too.  We actually love how this mobile turned out so much that we’ve decided to make one for ourselves as well!
