These ribbon and cardboard ornaments are the perfect way to add some gorgeousness to your Christmas tree and home this Winter. They are super simple and frugal to make and I think they look like traditional stitched wooden Christmas decorations you’d pay a small fortune for in the store.

In the run up to Christmas I do a lot of my shopping online. I’ve never been a great fan of high street shopping and busy noisy shopping trips can be really difficult for my deaf son too. Online shopping is a modern convenience that works so well for us!

One of the downsides to shopping online is the amount of packaging we collect. At this time of year I have an absolute abundance of card boxes so it’s great to put them to good use with some seasonal crafts like these gorgeous Ribbon and Cardboard Ornaments.

Because these cardboard ornaments are largely made from recycled materials they’re a really thrifty Christmas craft with the only cost being the ribbon. It makes them a great choice if you’re looking for homemade ornaments to make with a group of children at a school or a club.

These cardboard ornaments can also be made any size or shape you like. They look really lovely made small as DIY decorations for the Christmas tree and they also look great big as wall or door displays too.

Homemade Cardboard Christmas Ornaments Tutorial

Cardboard-Christmas-Ornaments-step-1

It’s really easy to make Christmas cardboard decorations to hang on the tree, walls or doors. First of all you need to choose your shapes and sketch them lightly onto your cardboard and cut them out.

Because cardboard is thick to cut it’s worth keeping your shapes fairly simple!

If you are making small cardboard Christmas tree decorations then Christmas cookie cutters can make great templates to draw and around and are just the right size!

Children might like these ideas for christmas cardboard cutouts: reindeer, stars, gingerbread men, hearts, Christmas trees, stockings, bells, snowflakes.

Once your christmas cardboard cutouts are done it’s time to have fun decorating them with a faux stitched effect. We made our stitched ornaments with a white Posca Pen that we used in small strokes all the way round the edge of each Christmas shape.

When your homemade Christmas cardboard ornaments are stitched, a grown up can then use the point of scissors to carefully make a hole to thread the red satin ribbon for hanging.

If you want to you can add more red ribbon decorations like we have in the star ornament above and the reindeer ornament below.

To make the cardboard star decoration we added a hole in the middle and one for each point of the star. Then we simply threaded the ribbon into the middle and out to each point, working our way all around. I love how pretty it turned out!

To make the cardboard reindeer ornament we didn’t make any holes but instead just wrapped the ribbon around the antlers.

I hope you love these cardboard decoration ideas as much as we do. I always thoroughly enjoy making something pretty out of what would otherwise be trash!

What shaped christmas cardboard cutouts will you and the kids make?  I have to admit to loving the reindeer cardboard decorations the most.
