Who else loves snails? They’re so cute and slimy! Your little snail fans will love making this PAPER PLATE THREADED  SNAIL CRAFT.

These threaded snails are great fun to make and are a wonderful way to build fine motor skills too. Kids can thread and lace yarn around and across the paper plates, to create beautiful and colourful snail shells.

This easy snail craft for kids is a great way to recycle any paper plates that you might have left over from a picnic or party. Your plates can be big or small and you can paint them any colour you like and use any oddments of yarn or ribbon that you have. We love that each laced snail craft will be unique!

Snails are such strange and wonderful creatures and are so different from us! I loved learning about them when I was little and all three of my children have too. We learnt a lot about how snails move and the type of surfaces they prefer in our fun Snail Racing afternoon. It would be a lovely activity to do alongside this cute threaded snail craft.

Spring and summer is the perfect time to make some snail crafts! This laced snail activity is such a fun and easy project for kids of all ages. It’s great for craft sessions in the garden, at home or at school. So gather up your supplies and get ready to make some cute snails!

Laced Snail Craft

If you’ve got any left over paper plates from a party or picnic, as long as they’re not greasy you can give them a wipe and recycle them for this craft.

We painted our paper plates but if you have ready coloured ones then these can, of course, be used instead.

How To Make a Fine Motor Snail Craft

Threaded snail craft step 1.

1 – Start by painting your paper plates. We used acrylic paints because they have a really good coverage with just one coat.

Threaded snail craft step 2.

2 – To make a weaving frame, hole punch all around the outside of the plate. You can do more or less holes depending on the ability of the child.

Threaded snail craft step 3.

3 – Then cut a length of yarn and sticky tape it onto the back of the plate.

Threaded snail craft step 4.

4 – Wrap a little sticky tape around the loose end of yarn to make it easier to thread through the holes. Next weave, lace and thread your yarn in any way you like between the holes. You could go around the outside or across the middle, or both! When you’ve finished, tape the end of the yarn onto the back of the plate.

Threaded snail craft step 5.

5 – Draw a snail’s body onto a sheet of green construction paper and cut it out.

Threaded snail craft step 6.

6 – Cut two rectangles to make eye stalks and glue them onto the snail’s head.

Threaded snail craft step 7.

7 – Cut two green circles for the eyes and glue them onto the eye stalks. Glue a smaller white circle into the middle of each eye and draw a pupil with your black marker pen.

Threaded snail craft step 8.

7 –  Finish off your threaded snail craft by gluing the shell onto its back.
