A Step-by-Step Guide to Make Your Own Christmas Cootie Catcher
Craft Supplies:
- Free Christmas Cootie Catcher Template (Get your free printables at the bottom of this post.)
- Printer Paper
- Scissors
- Colouring Materials; Pens/Pencil Crayons etc.
Step 1 – Download and print your fun free printable Christmas Cootie Catcher template. (Get your digital download at the end of this post.) We recommend using an ordinary piece of paper and not cardstock because it’s too thick to fold well.
Step 2 – Colour it the printable templates and write your Christmas messages.
Step 3 – Carefully cut off the excess paper to make a perfect square. Cut the square carefully as it will make creating the origami shape much easier.
How to Fold a Joke Teller
Now comes the simple origami folding instructions. It’s a super easy and fun activity!
Step 4 – Start with the printed side face down and carefully fold it in half horizontally and vertically and then open it up again. Now you will have found the centre of the square where the two fold lines cross.
Step 5 – Fold each corner over so that the point reaches the centre of the square. This will create a smaller square.
Step 6 – Flip the whole sheet over.
Step 7 – Fold each corner over so that the point reaches the centre of the square. This will create an even smaller square.
Step 8 – On the underside you will see four flaps/pockets. with your right hand, place an index finger and thumbs into the right hand pockets, then do the same on the left on the opposite side. Now you can move your fingers and thumbs to open and shut the cootie catcher. It’s so much fun!
How to Play With a Fortune Teller
Playing with the Christmas paper fortune tellers is super fun and simple. Kids fold the paper template according to the step by step instructions above. Once they’ve created their cleverly folded contraption with a sheet of paper, they can enjoy some party games!
- Play in pairs.
- Player 1: Insert your index fingers and thumbs into the pockets on the underside and hold the cootie catcher closed so that only the 4 Christmas pictures show to player 2.
- Player 2: Choose a picture.
- Player 1: Spell out the name of the picture, opening and shutting the cootie catcher forward and backwards and then side to side with each letter. When you stop spelling, four numbers will now be on show.
- Player 2: Choose a number.
- Player 1: Starting from 1, count out the number, opening and shutting the cootie catcher forward and backwards and then side to side with each number.
- Player 2: Choose a number again.
- Player 1: Lift the numbered flap to reveal the hidden message inside.
Kids will love using the holiday pictures and numbers to reveal hidden challenges, dares, fortunes or jokes (depending on what you’ve written inside)! These paper toys are lots of fun to play with friends and family and will provide hours of fun for everyone!
